Standard treatment is surgery. However, it is vital to remove some intact colon tissue and surrounding lymph nodes with the tumor during surgery. Surgical procedures that affect long-term survival, recurrence of tumor or spread to distant sites should be performed by experienced surgeons.
Nowadays, these operations are performed with a high success rate without laparoscopy. Advantages of laparoscopic-surgery include less postoperative pain, shorter hospital stay, and little or no scarring at the operation site. Preoperative chemotherapy and radiotherapy prevent the removal of the large intestine in tumors very close to the rectum.
